5 Simple, Inspirational Quotes for the Small Business Mind

small businesses signYou see them everywhere, all over LinkedIn and Pinterest, many of which never truly catch my attention but every once in a while I come across a group of words that stick out and simply make sense.  They seem so obvious, yet it is not until I see them  in writing do they really click.

I’m talking about some seemingly simple words of wisdom, inspirational quotes and/or rules to live by that are extremely practical and simultaneously brilliant.  I’ve compiled a select few that really hit the nail on the head!

"If you work hard and are kind, amazing things will happen." - Conan O'BrienMy Interpretation:  Work hard … work incredibly hard, and be polite/nice while doing so.  Many of us tend to be one or the other at times but the focus here is to work hard AND be kind at the same time.  Why? Because it’s easy to to take out your frustration on others especially when things aren’t panning out – lashing out and burning bridges usually don’t pay off.  You can never have too many friends, you would be surprised how many people will remember someone for simply being kind – plus, it’s the right thing to do.  It’s not easy but if you ask me, this is the true path to ‘amazing things’.

"Make the customer the hero of your story." - Ann Handley
My Interpretation:
You’ve heard the term “the customer is always right” well that does apply here but I’m talking about going above and beyond for each and every customer, treating them as if they’re the most important (because they are!) part of your business.  Send an e-mail before 9, have a meeting after 5 – do what it takes to make a positive impression on your customers.  Mediocrity rarely gets referrals – excellence does, give your customers a reason to tell everyone about you.

"A smooth sea never made a skillful sailor." - English Proverb
My Interpretation:
The true path to success is not an easy one, it’s usually a pretty bumpy road getting to your destination.  But those hiccups and stumbles will help you learn what to do (or not do to!) the next time around allowing you to continually perfect your trade.  Keep at it, become an expert and a point of reference for your particular field.  As an SEO Specialist I am constantly racing to keep up with the ever-changing search engine landscape, don’t give up – adapt! It will pay off!

"Success is the sum of small efforts, repeated day in and day out." - Robert Collier

My Interpretation:  Read above, do that over and over and over.  Determination, perseverance and patience are key.  Understand that if you keep at it, in time, good things will happen and goals will be met.  Don’t wait though – DO!  Also know that it’s important to keep that original ‘spark’ and not become complacent in your role.  Once you reach goals, set new ones and keep striving for perfection!

"The work you do while you procrastinate is probably the work you should be doing for the rest of your life." - Jessica Hische

My Interpretation:  Lastly, if you find yourself continually drifting when working on your TPS Reports, or you truly hate your job – then you may want to reconsider your career choice.  Sometimes you need to go with your gut and pursue what feels right.

Reader’s Disclaimer:  Take this quote with a grain of salt, we all procrastinate even when we have jobs we enjoy.  Personally, I think the key here is to find a career that you don’t absolutely despise.
